Why I Skip the DIY Cleaning Recipes on Pinterest
When my son was born, I was fairly sure I was going to break him from the minute I left the hospital so it was not surprising from that moment on, the thought of him coming into contact even with air, gave me anxiety. For real, you too?
Come follow me on Pinterest.
Pinterest was still fairly new, remember when you had to know someone who could invite you to join? At the time I joined Pinterest, I was looking for ways to eliminate ALL THE SCARY CHEMICALS and save money.
One idea was to take my cleaning back to basics and make my own cleaning supplies.

So I hit up Pinterest and found so many different DIY cleaner recipes, I imagine there are a ton more now. This was even before essential oils were becoming popular, or at least I hadn’t really heard of them yet.
I looked at all the ‘green’ must have cleaning products I had in my home and attempted to find DIY cleaner recipes to replace them.
I tried so many and just wasn’t getting the results that were being shown in the pictures. I mean, come on, this stuff isn’t rocket science but for whatever reason, things weren’t working out like the pictures promised.
I had heard about a company called Norwex in one of the Facebook groups I was in and decided to have a look.

Why I Chose Norwex
I hit up Google and researched this company, Norwex. I went onto YouTube and watched not only company made videos but user videos. I must admit, I was kinda over the moon with what I discovered.
I mean it was like this company was developed JUST FOR ME! The products made cleaning super simple but more importantly, the company was concerned about the planet and ways we could make a positive difference.
Norwex is a direct sales company and follows that type of business model so I reached out to an independent sales consultant because I had some questions and wanted to learn more before I bought some products to try.
It just so happened it was what was called a Join Risk Free month which, at that time, meant I could buy two of the products I had my eye on at a lower price AND get a few other products and hey, buy more products later at a discount with absolutely no requirement to sell anything or do anything other than use the products. Ummm, count me in!
I’ve always shied away from direct sales companies, those consultants, stylists, presenters, whatever you would call them are always so annoying. I’ll share why my opinion has changed to some extent, in another post.

Cleaning With Microfiber
After my cloths arrived (I got an EnviroCloth and a Window Cloth) I used them to clean everything. Well, it felt like everything. Cleaning with microfiber is quite different than cleaning with a cotton cloth. Microfiber picks up everything, cotton just pushes it all around.
To learn more about why cleaning with microfiber is amazing and will basically rock your world, come on over and check out 7 Outstanding Reasons to Clean with Microfiber.
Have you ever tried dusting with an old cotton t-shirt? It doesn’t work very well.
Years ago, I used those cloths that were meant to go on the floor duster things. I would get them damp and use them to dust my tables and stuff, it never worked very well.
With microfiber, the star shape fibers just trap the dust and hang on to it, removing it from the surface. Kinda amazing after years of struggling to get my coffee table dust free.
After a few days of cleaning with these magical cloths, I was pretty much sold. I wanted everything they would sell me or give me!
With no harmful chemicals to hurt humans or pets and no bottles of cleaner to worry about being spilled over, I knew this was basically the best thing since wine in a box.
I bought a few more things and got my kids to help me clean. I mean, they were the perpetrators of probably at least 75% of the mess and there’s no cleaning fairy living in my house, yet, so we all get to pitch in.
If I could figure out a way to put the cloths on the dogs feet without her trying to rip them off, believe me, she’d be helping also.
If you’ve heard enough and are ready to get all the necessities to switch to safer cleaning products, the Just Add Water package is exactly what you need to really get going.
My Top 10 Must Have Norwex Products
There are over 100 products in the catalog and I probably use at least 60% of them but these are the cleaning products I love and use weekly, most of them daily.
I’m the first person to tell anyone that I’m not a neat freak or a germaphobe so my house is far from spotless and looks like a tornado went through it on any given day but I blame that all on the kids, dog, and husband.
If I lived alone, life wouldn’t be as fun but it *might* be cleaner.
These are listed in no particular order, I’d probably be lost without any one of them. In addition to water, you’ll need your best 80’s tunes coming through that bluetooth speaker so you can dance your way to a cleaner home.
Head here to learn why my Norwex microfiber mop is a must have.
EnviroCloth – I lovingly refer to this as my all purpose cleaner. Get it wet with some plain old tap water (warm water is best in my opinion because it helps the fibers open up) and clean away. I’ve cleaned so many messes with this, I created a list of over 35 just because I wanted to amaze myself.
They come in the standard size and a smaller travel size. I actually prefer the travel size for most of my smaller jobs because it fits so nicely in the palm of my hand. The smaller size is also perfect for small kiddo hands…
Window Cloth – when’s the last time you cleaned your window only to have the 5pm sun shine through and all you see is streaks? Yeah, all that hard work for nothing. The Window Cloth eliminates all those streaks and that pesky paper towel lint on anything you want to shine. Mirrors, windows, stainless steel, granite, you name it. If you have a dog, you know the struggle with slobber caked on your windows! Click here to learn how the Window Cloth works and why it’s magical like a unicorn.
Body Cloth – if I have to choose a favorite, this is it because I use it morning and night. Think you need soap to get your face and body clean? Think again! Click here to find out why this Norwex Body Cloth is amazing and why I have a love affair with it.
I realize this product doesn’t make house cleaning any easier however, it actually can because you won’t need soap which means less soap scum to clean off the shower and bathtub!
Seriously though, it’s probably my favorite product. We love them so much, we take our Body Cloths with us when we travel.
Dusting Mitt – dust is like flies in the summertime, it just never goes away. I like this Mitt because I can put one on each hand and walk through the house wiping down all the surfaces in hardly any time.
Better yet, I give them to my kids and let them do it. Then after all the dust is magically gone, I just shake it out outside and it’s ready to use next time.
No dusting cloths to throw away, no sprays leaving a stinky, filmy residue on the surface. It’s awesome.
Laundry Detergent – just like dust, laundry never ends, does it? I love this powder laundry detergent for any number of reasons, mainly because it’s super basic, not loaded up with a bunch of fillers and great for anyone with sensitive skin.
It comes in a 2lb. bag which lasts my family of 4 about 4-6 months so I’m literally buying laundry detergent 2-3 times a year, WHAT!?! An added bonus is I use it to clean a few things in my house other than laundry.
Two other laundry detergent options are the Liquid Laundry Detergent (in a recyclable bottle) and the Eco-Wash Laundry Detergent Strips which come in a fully recyclable cardboard package.
Odour Eliminator – dogs and boys cause lots of stink! The struggle is all the ‘air fresheners’ just cover up the odor with a bunch of chemicals that you really shouldn’t be breathing in.
If you aren’t familiar with all the chemicals of concern contained in these products, hop on over here to learn how to get rid of odors without harmful chemicals.
Cleaning Paste – It seems there is always that one stubborn stain that just will not come out, no matter what you throw at it.
My go to for stubborn stains is the Norwex Cleaning Paste because with just a little extra effort and the Paste, I’ve been able to get most stains out.
Things like permanent marker off tile or the wall (thanks kids, your artwork belongs on paper), burnt on oil and whatever gunk off stainless steel pans, stains off the tub from things like bath bombs and such, it’s amazing! It comes in this tub type container and I’ve had mine for over 3 1/2 years!
All Purpose Kitchen Cloth – this is one of my favorite cloths and I use it for a very specific mess, stove top grease. Like I said earlier, I’m not a neat freak and so days can go by before my stovetop is cleaned, even if it’s got grease on it. Don’t judge! Do you clean your stove top everyday? Well, you probably do so you’ll love this cloth. This cloth and water is by far the absolute easiest way to remove stovetop grease for good. You can use it for wiping down counters and other general cleaning but where it really shines (no pun intended) is on the stovetop. The first time I used it, I was absolutely amazed! My stove hadn’t been that clean since we first bought it.
EnviroSponge – what I love about this sponge is it’s basically the Norwex EnviroCloth on one side and a scrubby pad on the other so it’s great for wiping down counters and tables that have dried on food, like err, ketchup, mustard, yogurt, spaghetti sauce, ice cream, etc.
All the things that kids (and husbands) drip when they eat. The most amazing part is unlike regular sponges which are like petri dishes and probably never get clean, these can be washed in the washing machine and dried in the dryer! Say what!?!
The sponge comes in graphite but isn’t this limited edition blue fun?
Veggie and Fruit Scrub Cloth – when I first got this cloth, I wasn’t sure I’d ever use it but it quickly became one of my favorites and it gets used pretty much every day.
One side is scrubby for harder skinned produce like apples, carrots, potatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, etc. The other side is soft, for soft skinned fruits like pears, nectarines, plums, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.
I’m not really sure how you’re supposed to clean mushrooms but hey, this cloth works for me! Again, I realize this does not clean your home but hey, it’s cleaning your produce!
Picking a favorite Norwex product is like picking a favorite child, you really can’t do it. Unless it’s a been a long summer day and you’re ready to break out the booze around noon. Then I can most definitely pick a favorite child but probably not a favorite Norwex product because hey, they don’t make wine!
In all honesty, I pretty much only use Norwex products and a vacuum to clean my house now.
There are several other Norwex products that I truly love and can shout from the mountains about but I don’t use them everyday so I tried to contain this post to just the products I use daily.

Absolutely! All the microfiber products are safe to go in the dryer. You can hang them to dry as well but I find the dryer fluffs them up a bit.
To clean stainless steel surfaces, I use a damp EnviroCloth followed by a dry Window Cloth. There is also a cloth specifically for Stainless Steel called the Stainless Steel Cloth.
Yes, they are.
That is definitely a matter of choice but I’ve covered some of my must have Norwex products above. The Norwex EnviroCloth and Cleaning Paste won the 2022 Good Housekeeping Cleaning & Organization Award for Most Powerful Cleaning Combo.

Great list! I definitely need to get the veggie scrub cloth.
Oh Ashley, you definitely need the veggie scrub cloth, it’s so well loved in our house.
Which product do you recommend for washing dishes?
Great question, for dishes I recommend the Dish Cloth (#307006) and the Dishwashing Liquid. For the dishwasher, the UltraZyme does an awesome job and only requires a tiny bit of detergent.
